Green Status and Environmental Practice

English on Dartmoor at Tinavor Cottage, South Brent.

English on Dartmoor is a member of the Green Tourism Business Scheme (GTBS) which provides green accreditation to tourism businesses.

We are delighted to have been awarded the GTBS GOLD award for ‘excellent environmental practice’.

We live in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and we have a continuing commitment to the environment.

We are active members of Sustainable South Brent (SSB) which is ‘pioneering sustainable solutions to climate change and energy security for the local community,’ and aims to involve as many local people as possible in taking positive action to combat climate change and declining energy resources.

We aim to minimise the harmful effects and maximise the beneficial influences which our activities have on the environment

We value and support our village and community,

  • the people in it
  • the local economy
  • community arts
  • the countryside
  • bird, animal and plant life
  • rural skills and crafts
  • an organic approach to food production
  • the environment

We share our home, our food, our countryside, our community and our skills with the people who visit us and are very open to sharing what they bring and contribute.

We have a lot to offer our students and they in turn enrich our community.

We encourage students to attend local events within walking distance of Tinavor Cottage and to be aware of the environment including

  • the Devon hedges
  • the moor
  • native woodland (for example Penstave Copse)
  • the South Devon Coast Path
  • the marshes on the River Dart
  • the Devon lanes
  • wild flowers (for example the bluebells in Ladies Wood in spring)
  • ‘birds, bats, salmon and seals’
  • Tinavor Cottage is 200 metres from‘National Cycle Route 2’.

As well as our own programme of walks and visits we inform students of guided walks organised by the Devon Wildlife Trust (DWT) and Dartmoor National Park Authority etc. in their free time.

    We are also members of:
